METABOLIC FUELS AND DIETARY COMPONENTS

About this course

The aim of this course is to learn more about our bodies and metabolic processes. We are going to learn about macro-molecules and their roles in our body. Good health requires a balanced diet that includes all the essential nutrients taken from as wide a variety of food as possible. We are going to explore what are the components of food and what are their effects on our health.

Lesson 1

Welcome to Metabolic Fuels and Dietary Components course. Before our first class I want you to watch this video, then read the story The waiting room. I also want you to make a list of meals, choosing groceries from this table: Calories in Common Foods.

 

Lesson 2

The topic of our second class of the course will be Body Fuel Stores. Before our class I want you to watch this video and do your pre-assignment using knowledge from the first class. 

 

Lesson 3

The topic of our third class of the course will be Resting Metabolic Rate. Before our class I want you to watch this video and to also try to answer the question What would happen to a 70-kg man if the 135,000 kcal stored as triacylglycerols in his 18 kg of adipose tissue were stored instead as skeletal muscle glycogen?

The topic of our fourth class of the course will be Physical Activity. Before our class I want you to watch this video.

 

 

 

Lesson 5

Topic of our fifth lesson will be Healthy Body Weight . Before our class I want you to watch this video and weight yourself with minimal clothes on and also measure your height.  

Lesson 6

The topic of the sixth lesson of the course will be Proteins-amino acids. I want you to watch this video and find the answer to two questions: What are acids and bases and what are polar and nonpolar compounds?

 

Lesson 7

The topic of the seventh lesson of the course will be the peptide bond and primary structure of proteins. Before our class I want you to watch this video.

Lesson 8

The topic of our eighth class of the course will be the other three structures of proteins. Before our class I want you to watch this video. I also want you to find the answer to the question: What kind of bonds do we have in molecules?

 

Lesson 9

The topic of our ninth class of the course will be Carbohydrates. Before the class I want you to watch this video and find the answers to these questions: 

  1. What are isomers? 
  2. What is the keto group? 
  3. What is the aldehyde group?

Lesson 10

The topic of our last class will be Virtual labs. Before our class I want you to watch this video, read this doc Test for Aldehydes and Ketones and also if you can make an account at https://praxilabs.com/en/
