MEDIA AND JOURNALISM

About this course

This course will offer an introduction to the profession of journalist. Students will learn the history of journalism, look at legal and ethical regulations, understand the elements of a good news story and different interview techniques, and more. Throughout the course, students will be engaged in discussions on various subjects, role playing games and case studies.

Lesson 1

Welcome to the Media and Journalism course! Today’s lesson is: An Introduction to Journalism. This lesson’s goals are to introduce you to the concept of journalism, state the role of journalism, and look at 9 types of journalism. We will discuss our personal interests in journalism and state our expectations of the course.

 

Lesson 2

Today’s lesson is a brief History of Journalism. We will learn about major events that had an effect on development of journalism as well as talk about some influential people in the profession.

 

Lesson 3

Today’s lesson is about Elements of Journalism. We will discuss 10 basic principles and practices that guide the profession of journalism.

Lesson 4

Today’s lesson is on Media Literacy and Fake News. The lesson’s goals are to learn the role media literacy plays in today’s world and to gain skills in identifying fake news.

Lesson 5

Today’s lesson is about Interview Techniques. We will study different types of interviews and learn preparation tactics and conducting techniques.

Lesson 6

Today’s lesson is about What Makes Up a Good Story. We will discuss the five Ws of journalism, learn seven elements of a news story, and introduce the Inverted Pyramid writing style. Note: there is a written assignment for this class! Read the sample document by following this link.

 

Lesson 7

Today’s lesson is about Broadcast Journalism. We will define the word “broadcast,” talk about members of the newsroom, and deconstruct a broadcast news story. Watch the example mentioned in the video by following this link.

Lesson 8

Today’s lesson is about Political Journalism. We will discuss what it takes to be a political reporter and what challenges one faces. During the class period, there will be a political-media simulation. Check your emails to learn about the role you are going to play in the game!

Lesson 10

Today’s lesson is about Journalism & You. We will look at how YOU can start your journalist’s journey TODAY. In class, we will debrief the course and reflect on the 10 days we’ve spent together.
